At ocean's edge
he bent down and pressed his little hands
on his thighs
his baggy swim trunks falling below his knees
the blue flaps on his sun hat blowing with the
sea breeze
expectant eyes stare sideways, focused on daddy
as he waits to hear, "Ready...Set...Go!"

They race into the sea together
splashing as hard as they are laughing
His two-year-old legs plunking through the water

small hands held in fists, arms bent at his side
just right for toddler running
back and forth,
in and out
They run and retreat
eager to start over again

This summer game of tag the waves
could go on forever
And wouldn't it be wonderful
if it could
